Saturday, May 16 delivered the kind of offshore racing that earns reputations. At Thunder on Cocoa Beach, Round 3 of the 2026 IHRA Offshore National Championship, the Velocity Ride Legal Speedboat Team turned a third-place start into a clean class victory, proving once again that composure and calculated throttle management win races when the conditions demand it.
Scott McCormick and driver Bob Spitulski piloted the #611 Ride Legal Velocity boat to a Bracket 600 class win, completing four laps in a time of 30 minutes, 17 seconds. After starting third, McCormick moved to the front on lap two and held the lead to the flag, never giving a competitor a clean look at the cockpit. The margin of victory over second-place Hammerheads, a full lap, underscored exactly how dominant the run was.
It is the kind of performance the Velocity program is built for. In Bracket 700, the Dirt Legal Velocity team had driver Brad Christopher and throttleman Connor Langheim aboard their carbon-fiber Velocity Punisher 22, powered by a Mercury Racing 300R V8.
They showed early speed that the field could not match on lap one. The #789 boat led the opening lap and posted the fastest single-lap time of the entire race: 8 minutes, 52 seconds. Two laps completed. Third place on the day.
The closing stages did not go their way, and the team will know the points left on the table. That said, when a team leads the first lap of a race and sets the fastest lap of the afternoon, the pace is not the problem. Offshore racing can be a hard sport, and the Dirt Legal Velocity crew has earned the right to carry their heads high into the next round.

Both Ride Legal and Dirt Legal teams are now heading to round 4, at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, June 12–14 for the Shootout Offshore, with momentum at their backs.
For McCormick and Spitulski, Cocoa Beach was a statement. A full lap ahead of second place is the kind of margin that builds championship runs. They arrive at the Ozarks as a team that has just proven it can win cleanly, from the middle of the grid, under pressure.
